  1. How does getting a whisky cask work in practice?

Getting a whisky cask is easy. Find the contract for the cask you want on this page, add it to the cart and complete the free checkout. That gives us your contact details; we'll get in touch and sort out the contract (see an example contract here, in Finnish). Once the contract is signed and the invoice paid, you're a cask owner. From then on you'll be invited to tastings twice a year to follow how the whisky develops. In 3–5 years the whisky is ready: it's bottled and delivered for collection to the Alko store of your choice.

  2. Can I share a cask with friends?

Yes – we even recommend it. Joy shared is joy doubled! Kyrö signs the contract with one person, who can then bring in as many people as they like to share the bottles and the costs.

  3. How much finished whisky do I get?

From 60-litre casks (which we mostly use) we promise 100 bottles of 0.5 l at 46.5% ABV. Cask shares are sized so that each share equals 45 bottles.

  4. What does it cost and how do I pay?

The costs are itemised on each cask contract's product page. Payment comes in two parts. Taking a Kyrö Malt cask with 100 promised bottles as an example: 1) €3,290 (incl. 25.5% VAT) to Kyrö after the contract is signed. We send an invoice, which can be split into 2 or 4 parts (€30 invoicing fee per part). 2) About €2,000 in alcohol duty and Alko service fees, paid at the Alko checkout when you collect the finished bottles from your chosen store in 3–5 years. We say "about" because evaporation (the angels' share) varies from cask to cask, and sometimes there are more bottles, which means more alcohol duty. The duty itself can also go up or down during maturation. So far, though, this estimate has held up well.

  5. How long does it all take?

The casks we use reach their peak in 3–5 years. Whisky can't be rushed, so it's best approached calmly and patiently. Our whisky team tastes the casks, and we'll be in touch when the whisky is ready for bottling.

  6. Can I have my own text on the label?

Yes. The label can carry 30 characters of your own text on one line. The cask also gets a copper plaque with up to 80 characters of your own text over several lines.

  7. A whole cask or a cask share?

Some casks are huge, and buying a whole one would be unreasonably expensive – but they also make wonderful whisky. We've split these casks into shares, and you can buy one or more. In these cases you can't keep the cask itself (unless you buy all the shares), but otherwise there's no difference from buying a whole cask. Either way, the result is delicious whisky.

  8. Can I bring the bottles home through a country with lower alcohol duty, such as Estonia?

If you're a Finnish citizen and/or live mainly in Finland, this isn't possible. We do sell whisky abroad too.

  9. I already own a cask – how is it doing and when is the next tasting?

The latest news on your cask is always at tasting.kyrodistillery.com. Use your cask number to check its status. If the number doesn't get you in, the spirit is still too young to have its own profile.
